National PR strategy tends to chase the same short list of top-tier outlets, and for good reason — the credibility and reach are real. But for many businesses, especially ones with a physical presence in specific cities or a customer base concentrated in particular regions, regional press coverage does work that national coverage simply can’t.
A regional outlet’s readership is, almost by definition, more relevant to a business that operates locally. A restaurant chain expanding into a new city, a real estate developer launching a project, or a regional services business all benefit more from a feature in that specific city’s press than from a passing mention in a national roundup that reaches a broad but largely irrelevant audience.
Regional and vernacular-language coverage also reaches audiences that English-language national outlets simply don’t. In a market as linguistically diverse as India, a story covered only in national English-language press misses a substantial share of the actual population in a given region — regional-language coverage closes that gap in a way no amount of additional national coverage can substitute for.
The editorial bar for regional coverage is often, realistically, more achievable than for a handful of fiercely competitive national desks. A story that might get lost among hundreds of pitches to a national tech reporter can be a genuinely interesting, easily placed story for a regional business or civic desk with fewer competing pitches and more appetite for local relevance.
Regional coverage also compounds well with a broader distribution strategy. A press release that runs through a national wire and picks up regional syndication reaches both audiences from a single release, rather than requiring an entirely separate campaign — making it one of the more efficient ways to extend a story’s total reach.
None of this argues against pursuing national coverage — the two aren’t in competition. But a PR strategy that only chases national headlines, while ignoring the regional press that actually reaches a large share of real customers, is leaving a meaningful amount of reach and relevance on the table.
